Teaching Science Tools in Kindergarten (And Why It Makes the Rest of the Year Easier)
I love teaching kindergarten science. It’s hands-on, it’s messy and it’s fun! But over the years, I’ve realized that we need to teach kindergartners to use science tools just like we would anything else. Otherwise, you end up with droppers up noses and hand lenses being used as pickle ball paddles.
Young children can’t investigate like scientists until they know how to use the tools.
Now I spend the first week or two of science introducing our classroom tools, and it has completely changed the rest of the year.
Science Tools Build More Than Science Skills
When children learn to use classroom tools correctly, they’re learning much more than science.
They’re practicing:
- careful observation
- following directions
- fine motor skills
- comparing and measuring
- solving problems
- taking care of classroom materials
- working like real scientists
Every one of those skills transfers into other subjects, too.
The Goal Isn’t Memorizing Tool Names
One thing I always tell my students is this:
Science tools help us collect information so we can learn and make good decisions.
That’s something even five-year-olds can understand.
Instead of memorizing vocabulary, we’re learning why we use each tool.
A hand lens helps us notice tiny details.
A balance helps us compare objects.
Droppers help us control liquids.
Tweezers help us pick up small objects carefully.
The tools all have one purpose: helping us discover something we couldn’t easily discover on our own.
My Favorite Science Tools for Kindergarten
Hand Lenses
Perfect for encouraging careful observation. Try collecting leaves, rocks, buttons, fabric, or insects (outside!) and let students become “detail detectives.”

Droppers
Kids absolutely love droppers. Instead of just playing with water, challenge them:
- How many drops fit on a penny?
- Which object absorbs water fastest?
- Can you move colored water without spilling?
They’re secretly practicing fine motor control while doing science.
Balance Scales
Young children often assume bigger means heavier. Balance scales let them discover that this isn’t always true. Those “Wait…WHAT?” moments are some of my favorite parts of teaching science.

Measuring Tools
Kindergarten is the perfect time to introduce measuring with nonstandard units like cubes or paper clips. I don’t focus on rulers, because the idea of standard units is really abstract. It’s important for young children to begin comparing lengths before they’re ready for inches and centimeters.

Tweezers
Tweezers strengthen the small muscles children need for writing while also feeling like real scientific equipment. Hide tiny objects in sensory bins and let students investigate.
Set Expectations Early
One thing I’ve learned over the years: Children don’t automatically know how to use science tools. If we simply hand them out, we’ll spend the entire lesson managing behavior. Instead, I teach expectations just like I teach scissors, glue, or crayons. We practice. We make mistakes. We laugh. Then we practice again.
By the time we begin our first science investigations, everyone knows exactly how to use the materials safely and responsibly.
And that’s when the real learning begins.

Final Thoughts
Let’s be honest. Kindergartners aren’t using hand lenses to identify plant cells or balance scales to calculate density. They’re discovering that science tools help them observe, compare, measure, and ask questions. That’s exactly where scientific thinking begins.
They’re not just playing around. They’re beginning to see themselves as scientists.
